EQUALITY IN MEN AND WOMEN

HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE THE CIVIL SOCIETY TO ACHIEVE EQUALITY AS A BUDDHIST LEADERSHIP?

Hi friends, I am new in blog so it is little bit hard for me to write posts and publish it. So, I am posting my own assignment which I wrote for my first semester (2009) for Buddhist Leadership. Please feedback as I can improve it by your advices :) Thank You
-Kushala Thero-

As Buddhist leaders, we have an ability and right to show the difference between good and bad to the civil society. We think that equality is well established in our present society, but, as if we really seek deeply through, present society, we will fine inequality anywhere in it. So, it is bad, being in and accepting inequality in our society. As a Buddhist leader what my opinion is we should deny the inequality system from our societies.

Types of Inequality
There are several kinds of inequalities in our present societies. Just like:
l  Gender Inequality,
l  Caste Inequality,
l  Religion Inequality,
l  Society Inequality etc.

Gender Inequality
In fact, two genders like, male and female are also considered as unequal in some society. Even though we know we have so many similarities, people accept women in low level. So that, one day Lord Buddha recited a gatha as “Na sabbesu thanesu puriso hoti pandito” which shows that men are not only, wise everywhere. Even in Sigalovada sutta Lord Buddha has recited about “Samanatmata” which refers to equality of society.

Caste Inequality
Since people were civilized in this world inequality about caste system was visible everywhere. Long ago in Indu Civilization there inequality was among the Aryans and Anaryans. Yet the same problem is remained among some villagers of Indu Civilization. As Lord Buddha’s teaching “One is considered as a lower cast due to his/her bad deeds, not because of his/her birth” as:
“Na jacca wasalo hoti,
na jacca hoti bhrahmano,
kammana wasalo hoti,
kammana hoti brahmano”

Religious Inequality
Religious inequality can be seen more easily nowadays in the society. Many violence and war has been occurred due to this “Religion Inequality”. As one of the Emperor King Asoka’s rule, “All religions are important for all and it should be respected by all” we can realize that no one can be against a religion as they are for welfare of the people of this world.

Social Inequality
The inequality, which can be noticed all over the world, is “Social inequality”. Now a society has been divided as:

i.           Upper class society
ii.           Middle class society
iii.           Lower class society

So although we know as a present law, we can be against these kinds of “Inequality” in our society. As we are Buddhist leaders, it is our duty to motivate our civil society by preaching and delivering “Dhamma” to be against inequality and show them the bad results of it.
